Exam anxiety can be paralyzing -- blackouts, panic attacks, or completely avoiding exams can make everyday life agonizing. In coaching, we work together to understand the causes of your exam anxiety and help you experience exam situations in a completely new state.
What is Exam Anxiety?
Exam anxiety is a form of performance anxiety that relates to evaluation situations -- whether school exams, driving tests, university exams, or professional certifications. It can occur in varying degrees, from mild stage fright to complete inability to function.
Between the ages of 15 and 30, students, driving school students, apprentices, and university students are particularly affected by exam anxiety. But it can also appear in later life stages -- for instance during professional development or driving tests. For some, even the preparation period becomes agonizing: sleep disturbances, learning blocks, or the feeling of knowing nothing despite good preparation.
Common Signs of Exam Anxiety
- Blackouts during the exam -- even though you actually know the material
- Panic attacks before or during exam situations
- Avoidance behavior: postponing exams or not showing up at all
- Physical symptoms such as racing heart, sweaty palms, nausea, diarrhea, or trembling
- Sleep disturbances and learning blocks during the preparation phase
- Negative thought spirals: "I'll never manage this," "Everyone will see that I'm failing"
- Concentration problems and inner restlessness while studying
- Excessive studying out of fear of not being prepared enough
Causes of Exam Anxiety
Exam anxiety almost always has deeper roots than the exam itself:
- High self-expectations: Many affected individuals put themselves under enormous pressure to perform exceptionally well
- Fear of failure: The fear of failing an exam can have a paralyzing effect and is often fueled by earlier experiences
- Lack of self-confidence: Low confidence in your own abilities makes every exam feel like an insurmountable hurdle
- Perfectionism: The need to do everything perfectly creates pressure that blocks performance
- Negative thoughts and beliefs: Negative self-talk and catastrophizing thoughts intensify the anxiety
- Formative experiences: Humiliating situations at school, harsh evaluation by teachers or parents can leave deep marks
- Insufficient preparation: The feeling of inadequate preparation can also trigger or amplify exam anxiety
How We Work in Coaching on Your Exam Anxiety
With exam anxiety I come at it from two sides: we work through what originally triggered the fear, and we change the thoughts and beliefs that keep it running. I use WingWave to defuse stressful exam memories and blackout moments. The Work goes at the thoughts -- "I'll never manage this", "If I fail, everything is over." NLP helps to consciously steer your mental state right before an exam. With deep-seated fear of failure rooted in childhood, we work with IFS or TRT.
