What is Fear of Death?

Fear of death -- also called thanatophobia -- describes an intense, often overwhelming fear of dying or death. It occurs in various situations -- often during serious illnesses, on an airplane, or in quiet moments when your thoughts come to rest. It frequently divides into three fears: fear of your own death, fear of the suffering of loved ones, and fear of their death.

A certain engagement with your own mortality is deeply human. It becomes problematic when this fear dominates your everyday life, sends you into panic, or prevents you from enjoying life. Those affected often avoid certain places, situations, or conversations and withdraw more and more.

How We Work in Coaching on Your Fear of Death

In coaching the point is not to deny the reality of death. It's about making sure the fear of it stops running your life. I often start with The Work -- because fear of death is based on thoughts that can be examined: "I could die at any moment", "There's nothing after." The four questions can shift surprisingly much here. I use IFS to get to know the part that goes into panic -- often a very young part that first learned about death. With WingWave we defuse the physical panic reaction. When the fear is connected to loss experiences or family imprints, we work with TRT.
